Reach for the skies
At the forefront of popularising astronomy since 1955.
Since its founding, the Guildford Astronomical Society has been helping like-minded people explore the cosmos.
For nearly 65 years the society has been a haven for those that gaze up in wonder at the night sky and ponder the deeper questions of our origins, as well as a gathering place to discover both historical and contemporary events and learnings taking place in the field of astronomy.
But whilst some things have changed dramatically over the years, much has also stayed the same. One thing that certainly had remained almost immutable was the society's logo and visual design.
And so it was felt that the time had come to modernise the branding, although to what extent it wasn't initially decided. We happily agreed to explore some options, to be presented back to the committee for further deliberation and agreement on a way forward.
Our intention was to start slow - introduce minor modifications that at least brought consistency and balance to the visual identity - and then introduce more dramatic changes later. However we eventually decided that without wholeale changes, enforced with strict design guidelines, the most likely outcome of any gradual transformation would be an inevitable return inconsistency.
We therefore embarked on a thorough modernisation of the branding; a bold new logo inspired by the society's spirit of adventure and search for knowledge, a new typeface and colour scheme, and a design system that provides a framework for homogeneous and uniform application of the brand across touchpoints.
The result is one of the most iconic and unique astronomical society brands in the UK. Universally (no pun intended!) praised by the committee, the new brand design has helped the society to further confirm itself as one of the foremost astronomical societies. The stylish new look is more approachable for a contemporary audience, whilst a structured design system provides more accessibility and adaptablability to an increasingly diverse range of applications.
