The Barbican Centre

A reactive new brand

the design language is anchored in one of the Centre's most prominent features - its architecture.

As part of a visual identity refresh and environmental re-fit, we designed a contemporary graphical language for the Barbican Centres' new digital signage system.

The system needed to unify the Centre's five core verticals; Art, Theatre, Music, Dance, and Film. It would also need to incorporate education and outreach programs, conferences, and a new public address and information system.

Following the new identity system, we extended the visual expression across all the verticals to create a modern, stylish signage platform that transformed the customer experience. This lends the language its core structure, while at the same time enabling flexibiliy to work across different departments.
Wayfinding
The system is rounded off with an intelligent digital wayfinding system avaiable as an iOS and Adroid app, to help better navigate the labyrinthian brutalist architectural maze that is the Barbican Centre.

In addition to creating the design system, we also created a series of templates and guidelines that form the reference point for any stakeholder creating content for playout. The result is a versatile and distinctive look that provides staff with a modular and expressive plaftorm for each department to create unique and compelling content and public information.
Hidden gems
Although the visual style is bold, it is designed to be unobtrusive - to blend in and compliment the environment.
